Event Project
This project was through the Idea Institute, hosting a spring fundraiser to support entrepreneurship and innovation at Western Washington University. This exciting event was in conjunction with Bellingham Design Week 2018. Organized by the students within the program, people came to enjoy an evening of interactive booths, food, and entertainment along with a raffle where you can win some amazing prizes!
Even though this was an extremely stressful experience for the teams involved, this is probably the most fun I have had being at Western. This program allowed us to get into the community, and this event was a great reminder of how important that is. We were given the task to put on an event from scratch, meaning we had to find a location, figure out what is happening, and then get people to attend. There were separate teams that handled operations, marketing, sponsors, design, and more. I was on the sponsorship team, where we would go find local businesses and ask if they would like to be involved in any way. This resulted in a large amount of items that we raffled off. We ended up with around $1000 in revenue.
The largest takeaway from this event was the stages of teaming. We fully went through the motions of forming when we established who had the certain skillsets needed to be fit in a certain team. Then we went through the storming phase when the event date was approaching, and then performing once that day came. The most exciting part was the adjourning phase, when we all went out for food and drinks once it was all over. I felt a much stronger connection with this group and it made the rest of my time in this program more enjoyable. I now have increased confidence being on a business team after experiencing this, and I will now know how to handle adversity more effectively when it comes to teaming.
